There's often nothing that you can do to protect your home from the unpredictability of a hurricane. Even if you scrupulously secure your roof, cover your windows, and tie down your gutters, flood waters can still creep into your house and destroy everything up to shoulder height or higher. If your property is damaged by a hurricane, here are some of the things you can do to recover after the storm has moved on.
Check for Updates
Listen to local radio stations or check the internet to see how recovery efforts are progressing in your neighborhood. When it's safe to return to your home, authorities will make an announcement. Make sure to have identification on hand as you may be asked to confirm your identity before you enter your neighborhood.
Make Your Way Home
As you make your way back to your house, be aware that moving water can present a serious danger. Moving water that is only a foot deep can still sweep your vehicle away. Whether or not it is moving, stay well away from water since standing water can carry electrical currents from downed power lines. Once you reach your home, remember that there may be hidden dangers inside. Proceed with caution as you enter your house and assess the damage.
File a Flood Insurance Claim
It's critically important that you thoroughly document the damage that has been done to your property. Your home insurance agency will require pictures of every part of your home that has been damaged to provide you with the right amount of compensation. Take plenty of pictures inside and outside of your house to fully represent the extent of the damage.
In many cases, home insurance plans will not cover damage that has taken place after a storm has passed. When you're done photographing the damage for your insurance agency, do what you can to prevent further damage from occurring. Try to cover roof damage with a tarp to prevent any additional leaking.
Returning to your home after a storm can be disheartening. Just remember that your flood insurance plan can usually help cover the cost to repair the damages to your property.
